About
Who writes this, and how it is checked
FlatWatt is an independent guide to plug-in solar and home energy for people in the UK who rent or live in flats. It is not owned by an energy supplier, an installer or a manufacturer.
Why the site exists
Rooftop solar assumes you own a roof. Roughly a fifth of UK households rent privately, and many more live in flats where the roof is not theirs to use. Plug-in solar is the first version of this technology those households can actually buy, and it became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026.
The information about it is currently poor. Most of what ranks is either written by companies selling the kits, or assembled by sites that cite each other rather than the source. We would rather read the regulation.
How we check what we publish
- Primary sources first. Where a claim rests on law, we quote the instrument on legislation.gov.uk and link to it, rather than paraphrasing another site's paraphrase.
- Every cited link is opened before it ships. A dead citation on a page about rules is worse than no citation.
- Numbers carry their method. If we give a figure for output or savings, the page says how it was calculated and what it assumes.
- Pages carry the date they were last checked.Regulations move. A page without a date cannot be trusted, so ours show one.
- We say what we have not verified. On a question of legality, an honest gap beats a confident guess.
How we make money
Some pages contain affiliate links. If you buy through one, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those links are labelled where they appear and disclosed at the top of any page that carries them.
Commission does not decide what we recommend, and no manufacturer has any say in what appears here or in what order. Where a product is unsuitable for a reader we say so, including when it is one we would earn from.
We do not accept payment for reviews, do not publish sponsored posts presented as editorial, and do not sell links.
Who writes it
FlatWatt is written and edited by a small independent team. Articles carry the byline of whoever verified them. We are not electricians, and nothing here is a substitute for advice from a qualified person about your own installation.
